How Many Stainless Steel Work Tables Fit in a 40HQ Container?

A 40HQ (40-foot high-cube) container holds roughly 60 to 70 fully welded stainless steel work tables of the common 1800 x 800 x 800 mm size, but about 278 of the same table in knock-down form. That difference, not the unit price, is usually what decides the landed cost for a distributor, and it is the first number to check before you compare quotes from China.

Why welded tables waste container space

A welded table is shipped as a finished box: legs, top and undershelf already fixed. The carton is close to the table's own outer dimensions, so most of the volume inside the container is air under the top. Stacking is limited to two or three layers because the legs carry the load on four small points, and the top layer often arrives with dented edges. Freight is charged per container, so every cubic metre of air is paid for at the same rate as steel.

What knock-down (flat-pack) changes

A knock-down table ships as a top, an undershelf and four square-tube legs in one flat carton, typically 1850 x 850 x 120 mm for the 1800 x 800 size. The cartons stack like sheets, the load spreads over the whole surface, and the same container carries four to five times more tables. Assembly at destination is done with bolts, usually in three to five minutes per table with a spanner, and the joint is a machined bracket rather than a field weld, so the table stands square without adjustment.

Typical loading counts our factory sees for a 40HQ, single product per container, standard packing:

• Square-leg double-layer work table 1800 x 800 x 800 mm, knock-down: about 278 pcs
• The same table 1200 x 600 x 800 mm, knock-down: about 540 pcs
• Four-tier storage shelf 1800 x 500 x 1550 mm, knock-down: about 400 pcs
• Single-bowl sink 1500 x 600 mm with legs, knock-down: about 300 pcs
• Fully welded 1800 x 800 x 800 mm work table: about 60 to 70 pcs

These counts assume 201 or 304 stainless steel with a 0.7 to 1.0 mm top and standard export cartons; a thicker top or heavier crating changes the numbers slightly.

How to plan a mixed container

Most importers do not fill a container with one item. A practical way to plan a mixed load:

1. List the models you sell most and the quantity you move in a quarter.
2. Ask the factory for the carton size and gross weight of each model in knock-down form.
3. Multiply cartons by volume and keep the total under about 68 cubic metres, which is the usable volume of a 40HQ after allowing for loading gaps.
4. Check the weight: a 40HQ is normally limited to about 26 tons of cargo, and stainless steel shelves and sinks are dense, so a mixed load usually hits the volume limit before the weight limit.

A factory that ships flat-pack can usually give you a container plan the same day, with the number of each item and the total CBM, so you can compare it with your own sales forecast.

Where the landed cost really moves

Suppose sea freight to your port is a fixed amount per 40HQ. Spread over 65 welded tables, the freight per table is roughly four times what it is spread over 278 knock-down tables. For a distributor, that gap is often larger than the difference between two factories' unit prices. The same logic applies to warehouse space at destination: flat cartons store on racking, welded tables do not.
